2008 was a year of dolls

a year of dolls

so this is it, the end of 2008 and on we go to 2009.

I've had a great year, it's been a whole lot fun. I tried quilting for the first time, and got hooked. Next year I intend to master the actual quilting part of it, not just the patchworky bit...I've got a long way to go.
I also intend to get busting my fabric stash. Although a FQ swap might be a way of mixing it up a bit, if anyone's interested?

Have a great night tonight, whatever you're doing. We have friends round, I have to make the beds first, I've cleaned the house, even got rid of the balls of fluff that were growing behind the doors, and under the sofa. Nice.

Shall I see you next year? I hope so, I really like having you around.

Sunday Stash, Season's Greetings, and all that jazz

Did you have a good Christmas? I did. The kids had a lot of fun, Miss G finally succumbed to the magic, wouldn't go to bed, woke up in the middle of the night, and finally got up for real at 7am, when Ginger woke her up shouting 'Merry Christmas!' He even managed to sleep in his own bed for the whole night, something the little monkey never seems to do normally (combination of noisy boiler, irritating howling farm dog from next door, and him being the lightest sleeper known to man - I think he is actually a cat, he only naps). So we had a lot of fun opening the presents, eating far too much, watching rubbish telly, playing with our new toys and then doing it all again on Boxing day. Hoorah! But as much as I love Christmas I do prefer normal days, so I'm glad to get everything back to normal and share some stash with you!

This week's is David Walker's robots. I bought it from here, and it came super fast from the US too. I'm planning on making a space themed quilt using this and some of the rocket fabric from prints charming. One day, anyway. Maybe.....

a stocking full of cheer...

Hope organised a wonderful Christmassy swap and my partner, Amy certainly knows how to stuff a stocking full of great stuff! The stocking itself is wonderful - natural linen with a patchwork tree applique and red pom pom trim. It contained so much stuff - some of it I have hidden away for Miss G's own stocking (oil pastels, ink stamp and pad). The candy canes are mine - no sharing, sorry kids, the decorations are hung on the tree, and the cookie cutters will be used for when we make gingerbread next week (and I try very hard not to mess it up...)

And this is what I sent Amy...

a little baby quilt (because she is pregnant with baby number 1)
a gingerbread man tin, with gingerbread kit
a little bag containing christmas decorations
a lindt chocolate reindeer (because Christmas isn't Christmas without those, same as Easter isn't Easter without the bunny version)
a candle (I buy a lot of these, I love them)
some christmassy badges
and what you can't see is a book, 'twas the night before christmas', because we read it every year on Christmas eve, and I love the rhyme

Hope - it was a great swap, I loved it! And Amy - thank you and merry christmas. I hope you liked the goodies I sent to you, and your little baby boy arrives safe and sound!

what I'm wearing Wednesday...

SOCKS! New socks!!! Made by Rachel for ME!

Thank you, Rachel. As you can see they fit me perfectly, and they're GORGEOUS!

The response for my rant about Miss G's school was overwhelming, thank you for commenting, I really, really appreciate it. I will let you know how it goes when I get W to write to the school. I promise you, I will keep badgering on until we get some kind of resolution.

ready for the rant?

You might need a cup of tea, coffee, or maybe a stiff drink. It's not midday here, but I'm sure it's after lunch somewhere in the world, so crack open your gin and settle down with me....

I'll recap for any of you that missed my exciting tale...

Once upon a time (3 weeks ago to be precise) there was a little girl, let's call her Miss G (because that's her name) and a teacher, we'll call her the wicked witch, and the rest of class 5D having a happy Christmas themed religious studies lesson.
'can you tell me what is in the Christmas Story?' said the Wicked Witch
'baby Jesus!, donkeys!, Mary and Joseph!, angels!, presents!' etc etc, came the refrain
'yes yes yes - very good' said the Wicked Witch 'anything else?'

And here's where the happy Christmassy lesson started to go down hill...

'SANTA!' shouted one giddy little boy (he is giddy, he always is, he's one of the rowdy boys, as 9 yr old boys should be)

'um, no, Santa is a myth created by the American Coca-Cola corporation' mumbled the Wicked Witch into her book

SHOCK HORROR - gasps all around the classroom, a lot of hissed whispering amongst the kids, nothing more was said by the Wicked Witch, the lesson moved back toward the baby Jesus.

Miss G came home from school that night all upset and tearful, complaining of tummy ache and feeling sick. She stayed off school the next day, and spent most of it whimpering and crying. I put it down to a virus and let her eat as many biscuits as she felt necessary (biscuits are magic, you understand).

Next morning, she is getting ready for school, 5 minutes before we leave she blurts out 'Miss N said Santa was invented by Coca Cola'. 'Pardon?' says I, she repeats it, in more detail. I stand with my mouth open thinking 'what the f&%k do I say now?'. Then the inevitable question comes 'so, Mummy, was she lying?' (I try to think quickly - I'm not good at it) 'Yes, she was' I say 'he was most certainly not created by Coca Cola at all, they just put him in a red suit one year, before that he wore green or purple'. I hope it's good enough. It wasn't....'no, is he a myth, or is he a real person?'

Now, most of the other parents I have since spoken to chose to go down a different road to me at this point, but my theory is this - the 2 sets of people (grown up ones) that influence children the most are teachers, and parents. Neither set should lie to the child, if a lie is found out then trust is lost, and that can only cause trouble further down the road. Most of the other parents said 'of course Santa is real, and if you don't believe he won't bring you presents'. I said this;

'Santa as you think of him is a myth, he doesn't come down your chimney each year, but he is a very important person and was a real man a long time ago, just like people believe Jesus was a real man a long time ago. He isn't alive now, but he is still with us in spirit, and when we get home from school we can google him and learn lots of things about him, ok?'

We spent the journey to school talking about it all, and she was pretty upset, but I promised Christmas would not change, not one bit. Obviously I was wrong, Miss G's theory was 'the magic is all gone, and that's the best bit'. So true, my little baby, but I won't let on I feel that way...

I phoned the school as soon as I was sure the secretary would be in, and told her the situation, she said she'd look into it and get back to me. I left it a couple of days, and then phoned again, the head was off due to bad weather but would be calling me. I phoned one last time before he did call me back and his response was a bit flat.
He apologised, he said he completely understood my upset and anger, and he would be the same if it had happened to his children (his are a similar age to Miss G), he told me the teacher in question had prepared a very informative lesson on Saint Nick, and the history surrounding him (obviously I had already done that with Miss G). Now, for me, the lesson was fine, and much needed, but to the other parents who had told their kids he was real it was merely the Wicked Witch telling them all over again that he wasn't. I don't know at what age children learn about the Saint Nick story, but I presume it's not in Juniors, more likely to be at around age 13?
I asked the headteacher to ensure that by the end of term Grace had gotten an apology in person from the teacher. I told him that it was all I asked, and not too much to ask for. I wanted her to know that Miss G was gutted - completely, that we had tears most days since it happened, and she didn't even want Christmas anymore. I wanted him to pass on my comments and ask her to structure her apology accordingly. I didn't need an apology, Miss G did.
He said ok.

Well, Friday was the last day of term - no apology, no note from the Wicked Witch, nothing. I still have an upset child, the matter still isn't resolved.

I have since found out (from speaking to another teacher) that the Wicked Witch is a difficult one, she isn't the most likeable of people, and that the head (as head of juniors - she is a seniors teacher) doesn't have much authority over her, that she knows it, and couldn't care less. I wasn't going to get the apology, not if he dragged her down by her hair and tried to force her.

So, since it's happened there's been a teacher in Manchester sacked for the same offence. I have been nothing but polite, and allowed the school to sort it in it's own way. However, after speaking to the teacher on Friday, she said my best bet is to speak to the Senior's head, and tell him because there's no way he knows. I have a feeling none of the junior school teachers like this Wicked Witch much, I feel it's about time someone brought her down a peg or two. I was told by the teacher that there has been a lot of chat amongst themselves about the situation, and non of them are best pleased. Miss G told me that her form tutor had sent her to the secretary's office with a news clipping of the sacked teacher from Manchester. I can't do anything now, as it's the Christmas holiday, but I am just not satisfied. I don't want the woman to lose her job (although I'd prefer it if there was a different teacher teaching them RS), I just want her to apologise to Miss G, to her face.

And that's it so far. What do you think of the school's response? Am I being unreasonable to think a verbal apology from the head isn't enough? I am planning on getting W (he's better with words) to write to the seniors head (who is the big boss of the whole school) and arrange a meeting with him next term. W is annoyed he didn't go to the school in the first place and kick up a fuss, but I don't think that's a very polite or constructive way to go about things.

Sunday Stash

This Sunday's offering is in honour of Lorraine. I don't think she has a blog, but let me tell you all about her....

Lorraine lives in Australia, she has a similar addiction to me, we are members of the underground support group, Liberty Addicts United (Ok, I made that bit up). Lorraine emailed me to tell me about a place in London that sold Liberty prints starting at £11 a metre. Kate did the same. Isn't it great how people in far flung corners of the world like to help me feed my addiction? Now, I knew of this place, but had never been, partly because I don't like to stray out of the comfort zone of Soho and Mayfair, and partly because I would get a lot of eye rolling and sighing from other members of the family. What I didn't know was that they sold online. Isn't that brilliant? Yes. I think so. The selection is amazing, they have LOADS of different prints, and remnants too for a measly £1. I will be visiting in person next time I visit London, and I will ignore any eye rolling and shop shop shop (I did buy a few bits from the website, it was nice and quick to arrive - postage was a bit costly, but I'm not complaining).
Back to Lorraine, she is collecting blues for an eventual quilt. So, Lorraine, if you're watching and I have any blues you don't have email me and I'll pop some in the post. Maybe you could send me a koala, a real one, I'd quite like to have one as a pet. Or maybe a wallaby - they're rather cute too. I think a roo would be too big. Although Miss G is fond of a platypus, it could live in the bath. Just poke some airholes in a box, mark it as fabric scraps, value $0 and I'm sure it'll get through customs no problem.

More stashes? Go here and drool to your heart's content, especially if your name is Rachel and you loathe Liberty prints - you weirdo ;)

Back to regular sewing, I am off to a birthday party later. I haven't met the little boy before, one of W's friend's kiddywinks. Apparently he likes pirates, so I've made him a pirate doll, and (just in case he hates dolls) a pirate drawstring bag to keep stuff in.

Christmas is a week on Wednesday. I am still behind, nothing is wrapped, I am sure I've forgotten to buy for a ton of people, I am halfway through quilting a lap quilt for my Nan, making 2 dolls for an order from a friend, but all international parcels are mailed and will be there in time for the big C. Miss G is slowly warming back up to the idea of Christmas after the RS teacher debacle. I'll tell you the school's response tomorrow. I'd like to hear your opinions on it...I don't think they've dealt with it adequately. Anyway, enjoy your Sunday, and I'll be back with a rant tomorrow...

what I'm wearing Wednesday...

No holes this time. Aren't I posh? Incredibly vacant look on my face though. And I'm back to black - blondes do not have more fun, they spend more time trying to keep their hair from falling out. I guess I'm just a brunette to the bone.

EDIT - My drawers (the chest, not knickers) are from Squint which is in London, and is very lovely...

Sunday Stash...a day late

Yeh, I know, it's not sunday, it's monday (and monday evening to boot, so really quite late for this...)

I was at my mum's yesterday, so I didn't get a chance. But I'm here now, ok?

This week's stash - Liberty print tana lawns. I am trying to sort out my collection into colours...but I got distracted by just looking at the pretty patterns. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow....

More stash here, come and join in!

I finished the baby quilt kit I got from Saffron's website. I even followed Fi's tutorial for the binding and did the quilting, then washed it, and dried it, and then stitched the binding on. I liked it...it seemed a bit of a weird way to do it, but I'm converted. Hoorah for Fi.

Now I need to have a baby....HUSBAND, come here, get busy!!!!

;)

Right - the links...I'm at my Mum's, and just did that post via flickr, so I can't figure out the links, so here you are;

Fi's blog for the binding tute

Saffron's website for the hand printed fabrics. She has a sale on the elephant panels too, $8 a panel instead of $15, and that's Oz dollars too, so us Brits get a good deal on the exchange rate. Plus there are pink, blue or red elephants to choose from. Go on, get yourselves off...

7.15am...in the dark...in the SNOW!

Ginger still has his PJs on under his clothes, he doesn't like his coat being done up to the top, but when you wake up with snow all you have to do is GET OUTSIDE!!!

Miss G argued solidly for 10 minutes that school rules said no wellies. Hmm. No, Miss G, school rules say wellies in the snow, please. She was convinced, hence the carrier bag containing regular school shoes.

Thank you for all your support yesterday. So far I've had no response from the school, but I'm phoning again today to chase them up. I reassured Miss G that nothing changes, Christmas is still as fun, but apparently it isn't, the fun part is hoping he'll come. She said there's no magic anymore. Poor little thing. In our house Father Christmas has never brought all of her presents, he only fills the stocking of every child, and brings presents for children less fortunate than our own, she has never been a materialistic child, if anything it's almost impossible to buy presents for her, there's never anything she wants. We googled Saint Nick last night so she could she who he was and why we have Father Christmas in the first place. I'll keep you updated on the school's response...

What I'm Wearing Wednesday...

The lovely Fi is having a 'what you wearing wednesday' thingy. So each week you'll get to see what scratty clothes I hang about the house in. Hmm. I should maybe start dressing up a bit, especially when you all you can see here are holes...holes in my slipers and a big hole in my jeans, and getting bigger every time I kneel down. I should fix them, but I can't be bothered. Because I'm lazy. Join in - what are you wearing? Ooh, that sounds a bit filthy dirty.

Look look look what Mr Posty brought me today... it's a present from me to me! Hoorah. (Those are the best kinds, you get what you want that way)

Lucy was having a giveaway, but I couldn't wait to see if I won (she still hasn't done the draw, not that I want any of you to go and visit, because I still want to win), I asked her (everso nicely) if she'd make me a picture of my very own. She did, and this is it. Isn't it amazing?! The detail is awesome, it's only a diddy little picture, fits perfectly into an Ikea Ribba frame, and it's still so detailed. The flower pots are my favourite bit. Or maybe the windows, actually I really love the clouds. Oh, dammit, I don't know - it's all too brilliant, I love every single tiny stitch.
And soon she's opening on etsy shop. I expect to be very broke very shortly.

Look at it close up - such beautiful little stitches....

But the goodness doesn't stop there, oh no....
I won a giveaway from Kathleen's blog (I did give her a sob story about ginger being ginger, therefore he'll get picked on when he starts school, and needing this robin or he would cry forever, it seems to have worked, I'll try it more often...). When I opened the parcel, not ONE robin but a BABY too! And awesome goodness...look (are you looking? Good)

Some long coveted ribbon, some liberty prints (there are 2, the other one is hiding, and I didn't already have these either - yay!), and some soft and lovely cashmere. Today I am spoiled rotten. Thank you, I like it, lots. I am thinking I might snaffle both robins and keep them for myself. Hmm. But then again, Miss G got some very bad news on Monday (it took her until this morning to tell me). The stand-in Religious Studies teacher told the class that a certain someone (we won't say his name in case there are smalls reading) is a myth created by Coca Cola. The shock!!! - I am furious, for 2 reasons...firstly, how dare she come out with that. Kids grow up way too quick these days, let them hold on to some innocence for a while longer, and secondly get your bleeding facts straight. He was a Turkish bishop. He was a real person, real and genuine, and Christian too, so perfectly relevant in RS. I phoned school, I am still seething. Let's look at my giveaway prize again to calm down a bit....

Phew, that's better.

Pay It Forward (and more plugging)

I just signed up for 2 PIFs...one on Clare's blog and the other on Natasha's ...which means I need to have one too. Actually, I should have 2, but I'm going to cheat a little bit. The first 6 names (rather than the usual 3) will get a little handmade something from me in the next 365 days. It'll be much sooner than that, the only condition is to do one of your own. If you have a blog have your own Pay It Forward, and spread a little handmade loveliness to 3 people, and if you don't have a blog, do something nice for 3 others.

Isn't the land of blog a lovely place?

ready, steady....COMMENT!!!!

Oh, and another thing....I just put some Christmas stockings in the shop. I know, I know - it's getting a bit late for Christmas shopping, but there's still time!!!!!!!! (I'm getting into this shameless plugging now, I am sorry. I don't know what has come over me!)

dolls for Christmas and an explosion in a flower shop

Let's start with the explosion - wear sunglasses if you are adverse to bright colours and a lot of flowers...

A little while ago Leah and I were paired for the bend the rules sewing easy lap quilt swap (mouthful?). The idea was to send your partner your own choice of fabric, they then made a quilt using the BTRS book, and sent it back. I chose a lot of flowers, I wanted something bright and a bit 'whoa'. Poor leah, she's a lovely person, and it was quite unfair of me to inflict all of those patterns on her all at once, she's far more subtle and subdued. But, look at what she produced....

Honestly, it's amazing. A million times better than the one I made for her (not the fabrics, the whole thing - the construction and everything). Leah, expect something in the post soon as a thank you - I think you're fab. It's just beautiful.

So, on to the dolls. After my shameless plugging of the baby quilt the other day, here's a very small (cheaper) plug.

Holly and Misletoe - in the shop. EDIT; THEY BOTH SOLD! WHOO! THANK YOU LOVELY BLOGGY FOLKS XXX
